Old School Console Games

Starting in January 2015 I'll be doing two calendars a month, one for arcade games and one for console games from the classic era (late 70s to early 90s.) That incorporates 8 and 16 bit consoles. My skills with GIMP have improved enough that I am faster at making these, plus it engages my creativity and reminds me how much fun I had playing these games back in the day.
My goal for 2015 is to learn 3D modeling with Blender software. That way I can recreate my favorite games and turn 2D objects into 3D characters. That's a big jump in artistic style.
I don't do this for the money. I make these tributes for the fond memories.

Inspiration

Inspiration
Where does it come from? Truthfully, there are days where I don't want to even start my computer because I'm not feeling inspired. And no inspiration equals no art.
Other days, like today, I can't stop making art.
I am in a good mood because I went for a 30 minute run this morning. That good feeling carried over into my creativity.
A little exercise is good for the soul. It rejuvenates you.
Strong coffee helps too!

Bring out the Gimp

All wallpapers made with the current version of Gimp.
Making video game art is something I have always wanted to do, I just lacked the skills to do it electronically. In January of 2014, I was stuck in the house for 2 days due to a snowstorm. I made myself learn how to use Gimp by trial and error. It's not that hard, but the software could use some improvements to make it more intuitive for beginners.
I approach each wallpaper as if it were a piece of art I would want displayed on my computer. First I create one piece that is pretty much true to the original game. Then I put that on my computer and let myself stare at it for a day.
Then I ask myself what could make this game even better? More villains? More bullets? More levels?
Then I go into the image and double up on everything until it looks crazy over the top.
